Flight duty norms revised; pilots to get weekly rest time of 48 hours

In a major relief for pilots in dealing with fatigue, aviation watchdog DGCA on Monday came out with revised norms that increase their weekly rest time to 48 hours and limit the number of landings to two during night operations. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has also extended the night hours for pilots and now, it covers the period from 0000-0600 hours whereas it was 0000-0500 hours earlier. Besides, all airlines have to compulsorily submit quarterly fatigue reports, which "should follow a follow a non-punitive and confidentiality policy".

British Prime Minister David Cameron suffered a stinging parliamentary defeat over Europe after Conservative rebels joined the Labour opposition to demand a cut in the European Union budget. The defeat on Wednesday night came after more than 50 rebels from the ruling party joined Labour Members of Parliament in supporting a demand for real-terms reductions in spending by the European Union. The government was defeated by 307 votes to 294, a majority of 13.

India appears poised to sustain its growth in a more durable way than before with the economy carrying the momentum from FY23 into the current fiscal year, the Annual Economic Review for 2022-23 released by the finance ministry on Thursday said. However, the report cautioned that escalation of geopolitical stress, enhanced volatility in global financial systems, sharp price correction in global stock markets, a high magnitude of El-Nino impact, and modest trade activity and FDI inflows, are factors that could constrain the pace of growth. "Should these developments deepen and dampen growth in the subsequent quarters, the external sector may challenge India's growth outlook for FY24," the finance ministry said.
